When buying a new smartphone, one of the most crucial factors to consider is whether you’re getting an authentic device or a duplicate (counterfeit). Counterfeit phones often look identical to original ones, but they lack the quality, performance, and reliability that genuine devices offer.
One reliable method to verify the authenticity of a phone is by checking its IMEI (International Mobile Equipment Identity) number.
IMEI number is a unique 15-digit number assigned to every mobile phone, acting like a digital fingerprint. The IMEI number provides essential information about the device, including its brand, model, and manufacturer.
By dialling a simple code #06# on your device, you’ll get the IMEI number on your phone’s screen.
To verify the authenticity of your device or before buying a new phone, visit the Sanchar Saathi web portal (http://sancharsaathi.gov.in), a platform operated by the Department of Telecommunications (DoT), a department of the Ministry of Communications.
After you visit the website, click on “Citizen Centric Services” and then scroll down and click “Know Your Mobile/IMEI Verification” facility.
Now, a page will open where you have to enter your mobile number. You will then receive an OTP (one-time password) on your phone. After this step, you will be asked to enter your IMEI number and then submit.
A page will appear which will show details found based on your IMEI number, such as brand name, model name, manufacturer, and device type.
