Apple Vision Pro, an augmented reality (AR) device, has been used for the first time in a live “bariatric surgery” by Delhi-based doctors. The procedure was performed by Dr Mohit Bhandari, one of the foremost bariatric and robotic surgeons in the country — at one of the surgical centres of Pristyn Care.
The surgery was performed in 40 minutes on a 45-year-old patient, weighing 155 kilograms and suffering from obstructive sleep apnea and high blood pressure. It included a sleeve gastric bypass and a Single Anastomosis Duodenal-Ileal (SADI) procedure.
The Vision Pro headset provided a highly immersive and interactive 3D environment, allowing Dr Bhandari and his team to visualise complex anatomical structures with unprecedented clarity. The surgery was carried out on May 17.
This technology facilitated enhanced precision in executing the sleeve gastric bypass and SADI procedure, minimising risks and improving patient outcomes.

This is not the first time that doctors have used Apple Vision Pro to perform surgeries.
Earlier this month, a doctor from Chennai used the device to perform more than 30 surgeries. Recently, Brazilian surgeons used the device to enhance shoulder arthroscopy, projecting high-resolution images and real-time data during surgery. In another instance, the headset assisted surgeons during a spine procedure in the UK.
Launched in February last year in the US, the Apple Vision Pro comes at $3,500.
